Wood TypesAt Just Remnants we offer all the standards: Oak, Maple, Walnut, Cherry and Hickory. Additionally, you may choose exotics like Teak, Merbau, Lyptus and Tigerwood. Each species of wood has its own unique graining and texture that are determined by the way the wood has been cut. Within each species of hardwood you have a choice of color, finish and hardness. Your Just Remnants sales associate will gladly give you a tour of the forest.
Board SizeThe general look of your Hardwood floor is influenced by the size of boards. Solid flooring comes in three basic sizes; 1. Strip, 2. Plank and 3. Parquet. Strips generally come in narrow widths of various lengths and are the most modern popular style. Planks have a more rustic look and come in wider widths. Parquet is made up of fixed repeating patterns of smaller pieces of wood. Parquet can be both rustic and elegant depending on a number of installation choices. Both solid and Engineered floors follow this board pattern.
Hardwood TypesSolid Wood floors are one solid piece of wood with tongue and groove sides. Solid wood floors can be installed pre-finished or unfinished. In either case, Pre-finished floors offer a wider variety of wood species and save time in installation. Unfinished wood floors allow you to have a custom job – you choose the wood and it’s sanded and stained on site. There are some limitations on where solid wood floors can be installed because they are more susceptible to moisture and are generally not recommended for basements or on a concrete slab.
Engineered Wood floors are generally manufactured with up to 5 thin sheets or plies of wood that are laminated together to form one plank. The plies are glued cross grain to each other to form a stable structure. The top, visible layer of actual wood varies in thickness and finish according to the specific product. These floors can typically be installed below grade. Engineered floors, because of their structural stability, ease of installation and cost are a very popular choice. The EnvironmentJust Remnants offers both solid and engineered hardwood from many environmentally conscious sources who harvest from sustainable forests. Whatever your choice, your new Hardwood floor will provide warmth, long wear and convenience that will add value and beauty to your home for years to come.
