Carpet

Carpet Knowledge

carpet-kids-room
Modern carpet traces its roots to ancient times, when cultures passed hand-tying and knotting skills from generation to generation. The Sixteenth Century brought merchant adventurers and explorers home to Europe and with them the awareness and desire for rich textiles and rugs from the East. It wasn’t long before the appreciation of textile floor coverings took off, came to America, and became one of the most fundamental parts of our modern home interior.

Fiber

Wool

The most wanted, luxurious, and expensive, carpet fiber is Wool. Natural Wool is a sustainable, stain resistant, long wearing product. We stock hundreds of rolls of real Wool carpet and always offer the best value in the market for cost conscious consumers. We’ve got a whole room full of roll after roll of Luxurious Wool Carpet at astonishing low prices.

Synthetic

Synthetic fibers, such as Nylon, Olefin and Polyester make up 99% of the carpet produced in the United States. These synthetics each offer specific wear, feel and cost benefits. We have hundreds of rolls of synthetic fiber carpet from which to choose. We’ll be happy to help you choose the right carpet for your specific needs.

Carpet Styles

Weaves

There are seven basic carpet weaves: Textured, Berber, Saxony or Plush, Cut and Loop, Commercial, Frieze and Cable.

Carpet texture
Texture
Texture carpet, a very popular style, consists of alternating twists of yarn, creating a two-tone appearance which helps minimize the appearance of footprints and vacuum marks.
berber_carpet
Berber/Looped
Berbers are looped style carpet. Berbers are big, bulky yarns that are produced in a level loop, or multi-level loop construction. They wear well in active areas but seams may be more noticeable.

Cut and Loop
A combination of cut and looped yarns that create pattern effects by the variation in surface textures. Also known as patterned carpet, this style is very popular due to the variety of patterns available today. Cut and Loop carpets come in geometrics, floral, classic pin dots and creative animal patterns.
cream-saxon-carpet
Saxony/Plush
A formal, smooth and level cut pile carpet. Please note, footprints and vacuum marks are more visible with a Saxony style.
commercial-carpet
Commercial
Carpets made for commercial uses are generally tighter weave synthetics specifically designed for long wear and easy maintenance. They are a practical choice for any commercial use but are also commonly used in residential applications.
Frieze
Frieze
Another cut pile style of carpet that has a high twist level. Each strand is twisted so tightly it actually curls over at the end. Friezes are hard working and are perfect for the active household.
cable-carpet
Cable
Carpet is constructed of thicker, typically longer yarn. It’s very comfortable underfoot and beautiful in a bedroom or living room but can matte down in high traffic areas.

Other Considerations

Padding

This is the cushion that goes between the carpet and the floor in a normal installation. A properly chosen pad acts as a sound barrier and insulator between a cold sub floor and your toes. Good pad extends carpet life and provides that “walking on a cloud” comfortable, luxurious feel. Specific styles of carpet demand specific pads. We always make sure that you get the right pad for the application and type of carpet you choose.

Color and Aesthetic

Choosing carpet from the tiny swatches at most carpet stores can be misleading. It’s almost impossible to judge weave, texture, and light reflective properties from a 4” sample. At Just Remnants you choose your carpet by the roll so you know exactly what it will look like on your floor. We’ll even cut samples so you can check color against your own furniture and accessories.

Pricing

All in-stock carpet is clearly marked and priced so you know exactly what you’re buying. In most cases our prices are up to 70% below other store’s retail. You can buy carpet by the piece, roll or job. Your Just Remnants Sales Associate is a highly trained professional. We discuss every aspect of your project and then give you a written estimate. When we price a job we price the whole job to minimize the chance of surprises.
