Use mats at all entrances to your home and always wipe your feet. Mats are inexpensive and effective. It’s easier to keep your carpets clean if dirt doesn’t get to them in the first place.
Vacuum
A good vacuum cleaner can be your carpet’s best friend. Buy a quality vacuum and use it regularly: at least once a week. Thorough vacuuming removes loose dirt and dust from the fibers, extends carpet life and keeps the air cleaner in your home.
Suction
Use a machine with good suction. Although beater bar vacuums are very popular, a suction only vacuum is the best to ensure a long life for your carpet. If your vacuum uses bags, be sure to change them frequently for superior cleaning efficiency.
Beater Bars
Some of the new high suction, beater bar vacuums can damage some carpets. Aggressive beater bars can also reduce carpet life. Your Just Remnants Sales Associate can help you determine the right vacuum for your carpet. More is not always better.
Trimming
Please note that loop carpets can snag, especially at a seam or a carpet transition. Don’t vacuum over loose yarn or try to pull out the snag. Carefully trim the yarn flush with the carpet, and without catching any surrounding loops.
Clean Spots and Spills NOW!
Do not give those inevitable accidents time to ruin your carpet. Treat the stain with an approved safe stain remover and remember to always blot, not rub, the stain.
Water Works
You will be pleasantly surprised at how well water works at removing fresh stains. In some cases a little, bleach free, dishwashing liquid in the water will give great results.
Natural Light/Sunlight
Carpet that is near windows and patio doors can be subjected to harmful ultraviolet rays that can effect color and long wear. Be sure to use window treatments that offer protection against the sunlight.
Professional Cleaning
Professional carpet cleaning at least once a year by a reputable service is vital to the longevity of your carpet and a requirement of most manufacturers’ warranties. Avoid supermarket cleaning equipment and do it yourself methods: a little savings can be very expensive in the long run.
